ABOUT MATEUSZ MIKOLAJCZAK

Polish pianist Mateusz Mikolajczak has established an international presence through performances across the United States, Europe, and Asia. A compelling performer with a powerful stage presence, he is known for the intensity of his musical storytelling, remarkable command of the instrument, and a deeply personal approach to interpretation. Combining technical assurance and freedom with a strong sense of narrative, architectural clarity, and a distinctive range of color, Mikolajczak creates performances in which virtuosity serves a larger dramatic purpose.

Based in New York City, Mikolajczak was invited to pursue the prestigious Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School, where he studies with Soyeon Kate Lee and previously earned his Master of Music degree. His artistic development has also been guided by Emanuel Ax, Gary Graffman, and Robert McDonald, among other distinguished musicians. Prior to Juilliard, he graduated from the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, where he studied with Milana Chernyavska, Claudio Martínez Mehner, and Denis Lossev. Earlier in his musical development, he studied with Helena Furmanowicz-Kurzyńska and Grzegorz Kurzyński, who played an important role in his early artistic development.

Mikolajczak has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, the National Forum of Music in Wrocław, Auditorio Sony in Madrid, and other venues internationally. His festival appearances include the International Chopin Festival in Duszniki-Zdrój, PianoFest in the Hamptons, and Allegro Vivo, among others. In New York, he has also presented a series of six solo recitals at New York’s iconic Grand Central Terminal as part of the Dear New York cultural project.

A prizewinner of international competitions on three continents, Mikolajczak received Second Prize at The Juilliard School’s Mieczysław Munz Piano Competition, Third Prize at the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition, Third Prize at the Busan Maru International Music Festival Concerto Competition, and First Prize at the Karol Lipiński International Piano Competition.

Alongside his performing career, Mikolajczak is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Classical Piano Salon in New York, an initiative creating a more intimate and direct relationship between leading classical musicians and contemporary audiences. His artistic interests include the exploration and promotion of historically underrepresented repertoire, with particular attention to the music of Nadia Boulanger, Rebecca Clarke, and Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz.

For Mikolajczak, music has always been a form of storytelling — a place where what cannot quite be said can still be felt. He approaches each work as a world of its own, searching beneath the surface for its characters, tensions, contradictions, and moments of vulnerability. In performance, those elements become part of a narrative that is never entirely fixed, unfolding differently in the space and silence of each concert. What matters most is what remains with the listener after the final note has disappeared.
